Located on the northern coast of São Vicente, Salamansa is a scenic kitesurfing spot known for its long, empty white beach, steady winds, and spectacular mountain views.
The spot receives consistent trade winds, mainly from the northeast, blowing at around 20 knots for 80% of the year. The best kitesurfing season runs from November to May, with particularly favorable months including January through April.
Salamansa is best suited for intermediate to advanced riders, as the water is typically choppy with small to medium waves and the wind direction is almost always onshore. While it’s not ideal for freestyle or beginners due to the challenging surface, wave riders will appreciate the rolling swells and kickers for big jumps and dynamic sessions.
There are two kite schools at the spot, both of which also offer food services. Accommodation is limited in Salamansa itself—there is just one kitehouse in the village, and no hotels or hostels. For more comfortable lodging, you’ll need to stay in Mindelo, the main city on the island. Keep in mind, public transport between Salamansa and Mindelo is limited, so a rental car or transfer is advisable.
