Ponta Preta, located on the island of Sal, is one of the most legendary wave kitesurfing spots in the world. Known for its medium to massive waves, which can reach heights of up to 6 meters during peak season, this spot offers a thrilling challenge exclusively for highly experienced riders. The powerful right-hand wave breaks close to the rocks and rolls over a shallow reef, combined with strong side-offshore winds from the northeast—making this location suitable only for advanced kitesurfers with solid wave-riding skills.
The windiest period at Ponta Preta runs from November to April, when consistent trade winds average between 15–25 knots. The biggest and most powerful swells typically arrive between January and March, making it one of the most exhilarating times to ride here. Due to the offshore wind and the force of the waves, it’s strongly recommended not to kite alone.
Ponta Preta has earned its place on the wave kitesurfing world tour and is home to legends like Mitu Monteiro and Airton Cozzolino. Even if you're not riding, it's worth visiting just to witness elite kitesurfers perform jaw-dropping tricks against a dramatic ocean backdrop—an unforgettable experience for any water sports fan.
