Atkins, 600 kilometers west of Fortaleza, is the endpoint for many legendary downwinders. The meandering river mouth in the Delta of the River Preguiças creates ever-changing sandbanks and knee-deep lagoons. Kiters will find ideal conditions in this region of the world, thanks to the persistent high winds that are typical of these coastlines. But Atins has something even better to offer! The village is located at the entrance of the magnificent Lençóis Maranhenses, a one-of-a-kind terrain that combines white dunes with abundant underground water supplies, making for a really spectacular sight to behold, especially while flying a kite!
Kiters will find great conditions in Atins between July and December. During this period, persistent cross on-shore winds of 15 to 30 knots batter the huge and sparsely populated beaches.
