Agios Nikolaos is a charming seaside village nestled between Preveza and the island of Lefkada, and just two kilometers outside the village lies one of the most versatile kitesurfing spots in western Greece. The spot is located on a long sandy spit that divides the sea into two distinct kite areas, offering different conditions for various styles and levels of riders.
The front (sea-facing) side of the sand strip stretches for about 2 kilometers, with side-onshore winds that make this section extremely safe—any rider in trouble will naturally drift back to shore. The beach has soft sand, with no rocks or sharp objects, making it ideal for launching and landing. The upwind zone of this area is typically reserved for kite schools and instructors, so independent riders should head slightly upwind to stay clear of the lesson areas. This section is beginner-friendly thanks to a stretch of shallow water that extends around 30 meters from the shore. Further out, the sea becomes moderately choppy, but a reef located 2 kilometers upwind helps break larger waves and limits rough conditions. This side of the spot is also well-suited for kitefoiling, thanks to the gradually deepening water and open space.
On the opposite (lagoon-facing) side of the sand strip is a hidden gem for freestylers—a flatwater lagoon that directly faces the village of Agios Nikolaos. This area features mirror-flat water and side-offshore wind conditions. It’s shallow near the shore, with just 20 cm depth, and deepens gradually to around 2 meters downwind, making it ideal for freestyle but unsuitable for kitefoiling due to the limited depth.
The thermal wind here typically blows at 15–20 knots from May to September, with the most reliable and stable wind direction being west. Although it’s slightly less windy than the better-known Agios Ioannis (Milos Beach), Agios Nikolaos offers unbeatable learning conditions and is arguably one of the safest spots in the region for beginners.
Whether you're learning the basics, perfecting freestyle tricks, or gliding on a foil, Agios Nikolaos provides a relaxed, safe, and scenic environment for every level of kitesurfer.
Pay to 10 euros to stay on a beach which is overcroweded with not so strong thermal wind. The so called beach club is nothing special and does not even offer a decent toilet. Beach club employee was not very friendly to us. He did not explain the regulations well and basically was only concerned with charging anybody entering the beach. Overrated..
Good spot for beginners. You must pay for staying there (around 7 eur per day) and will get water, quite a bad toilet and access to the beach bar. Otherwise there is nothing. But the village is about 2km far away so you can always go shopping. Wind is present almost every day but it’s usually not strong. Around 12 to 14 knots. If you get stronger wind you can enjoy perfect sessions on flat water on the other side of the beacch.
