Tanger, located in northern Morocco, is a prime kitesurfing destination thanks to its unique location at the crossroads of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, near the Strait of Gibraltar. The city benefits from consistent winds throughout the year, influenced by both the Rif Mountains and the strait, making it a great spot for water sports like kitesurfing.
Tanger experiences favorable kitesurfing conditions all year round, with strong winds during the warmer months. The predominant wind is the Levante, the same powerful east wind that affects nearby Tarifa in Spain, just a few miles away. This wind, combined with the diverse geography of the region, offers kitesurfers a range of conditions, from flat water to small waves.
Tanger’s main urban beach, located right in the heart of the city’s waterfront, east of the port and marina, is the primary kitesurfing spot. This beach stretches along the coast and, outside of the busy summer months, provides plenty of space for kitesurfers to enjoy freeride sessions. During peak season, the beach gets crowded with swimmers and tourists, so kitesurfing is best enjoyed in the off-season when the crowds thin out.
Tanger is an ideal location for kitesurfers either arriving in or leaving Morocco through the port.
