Pranburi, located about 300 kilometers south of Bangkok and 20 kilometers from Hua Hin, is an underrated kitesurfing destination in Thailand that deserves more recognition. This small town offers a beautiful beach, excellent wind conditions, and a unique charm that attracts both local and international kitesurfers. It is particularly popular in March when it hosts the renowned Kite Tour Asia (KTA) competition, drawing world-class kiters to compete in the Big Air discipline.
Pranburi benefits from two main wind patterns that make it a prime spot for kitesurfing for up to eight months a year. From October to January, the northeast monsoon brings cool side-onshore winds with speeds ranging from 18 to 25 knots, with December being the most consistent. Between February and May, the trade winds from the south dominate, offering slightly lighter but steady winds around 20 knots, with March and April being the windiest and hottest months.
The area features three main kite beaches, each with its own unique appeal. Pak Nam Pran is best suited for the winter season, with its reliable winds during the northeast monsoon.
Six kilometers south of Pak Nam Pran, Khao Kalok provides a flat-water lagoon at low tide, making it a great spot for freestyle riding and skill development.
Dolphin Bay, located two kilometers further south at the edge of the 300 Peaks National Park, offers a vast 12-kilometer coastline with lighter, more onshore winds in the spring. This beach is ideal for beginners, with plenty of space. Occasional swells create kickers and wave-riding opportunities at low tide near the sandbars.
With its reliable wind conditions, diverse kiting spots, and serene atmosphere, Pranburi is an excellent choice for kitesurfers seeking both adventure and relaxation in Thailand.
