Located on the northwestern coast of Boa Vista Island, Praia de Chaves is one of Cape Verde’s most exciting and diverse kitesurfing spots. This long, sandy beach offers plenty of space for safe launching and landing, with consistent side-shore winds and a variety of conditions to suit all skill levels. Close to the shore, the water is flat and ideal for beginners and freestyle riders, while around 300 meters out, waves ranging from 1.5 to 3 meters offer an excellent playground for advanced wave kiters.
The wind at Praia de Chaves is predominantly northeast and blows steadily between 16–28 knots during the main kitesurfing season from November to May. With comfortable air temperatures around 25°C and plenty of sunshine, conditions are reliably great throughout the season.
At the far end of Praia de Chaves, you’ll find a “secret spot” only accessible by 4x4 over rolling sand dunes with stunning ocean views—a truly unique experience. When the wind shifts slightly more to the north, this spot offers especially stable side-shore conditions and bigger waves. Be cautious of currents if you drift too far left. For experienced riders, a 6 km downwinder from the nearby town is also an option—just be sure to arrange pickup afterward.
