Just a short drive from Athens, Skala Oropou (also known as Oropos) is considered one of the top kitesurfing destinations in the region.
Set along the narrow strait opposite Evia island, the spot benefits from a natural wind tunnel effect that enhances the local breeze, especially during the summer months when thermal winds kick in reliably and consistently. The ideal wind direction is from the east to southeast. Note that strong northern Meltemi winds, while common in Greece, tend to overpower the thermal effect here and make kiting impossible on those days.
Access to the spot is straightforward—just follow the paved road to the small beach at Akrotiri. From there, the terrain transitions to sandy tracks, which can be a bit rough, but lead you directly to the launching area. The main kiting zone features a wide, sandy beach and shallow waters just a few dozen meters from the shore, making it particularly beginner-friendly. The launch and land area is grassy, clean, and open—perfect for setting up without hassle.
Although there’s a southern section where kiting is technically possible, it lacks the comfort and cleanliness of the main spot. The beach and seabed there aren’t as welcoming. A small lagoon nearby offers flat water conditions, but it’s extremely shallow and not ideal for regular riding.
While the spot is generally relaxed, expect more traffic during weekends and peak summer due to its popularity and proximity to local schools.
