El Médano (Tenerife)

El Médano is Tenerife’s premier kitesurfing destination, located less than fifteen minutes from the airport. This vibrant town offers ultra-reliable wind, making it a favorite among wave, freestyle, and freeride kitesurfers.

The spot features choppy water, a sandy beach, and some rocks to watch out for. It can accommodate around 125 kitesurfers, with a designated launch area on the right side of the beach, while the left side is reserved for swimmers. The setup area is spacious, obstacle-free, and allows for an easy start from shallow waters.

The wind is highly consistent from January to September, with a slight lull in May and June. The strongest winds occur in July and August, bringing the biggest waves, but favorable conditions persist through December. The predominant northeast wind blows side-onshore at El Médano, typically ranging from 14 to 28 knots, with occasional gusts exceeding 30 knots. The spot enjoys warm temperatures year-round, making it a reliable destination in every season.

Wave conditions vary depending on the tide and wind strength. At low tide, the water remains mostly flat, which is ideal for beginners taking their first kitesurfing lessons. At high tide, waves can reach 1.5 to 3 meters, especially when the wind exceeds 25 knots, creating excellent conditions for more advanced riders looking for a challenge.
