Akyaka, a small seaside village located on the Gulf of Gökova, gained popularity just a decade ago thanks to kitesurfers. Unlike Alacati, which is crowded with tourists during the high season, Akyaka feels more like a town reserved for kitesurfers.
What makes Akyaka special are its three-kilometer-wide shallow sand area and constant thermal winds. Akyaka is an excellent place for kitesurfers of all levels and creates an ideal environment for beginners.
Akyaka has strong winds from May to November, with the hottest months of June, July, and August considered the high season with stronger winds.
Akyaka is best when the weather is hot because the spot depends on thermal winds. These winds blow from the sea to the land and funnel through the valley, ensuring wind as long as it’s sunny and hot. During the season, winds with speeds around 15-18 knots are common.
There are many kite centers and schools, with a lot of teaching happening in the water. Lessons take place in the area in front of the schools, so getting out past the students can be a bit of a hassle. However, once you are upwind of them, you have a big playground with few kiters around.
The beach is divided into two sections by a seawall. The left side is managed by a kiteschool. By paying a fee (20 TL per person per day), you can access all the facilities and services or surf on your own, but an IKO license is required. If you don't have an IKO license, you can obtain one from the IKO instructors at the school.
The right side, managed by another school, offers the same flat water, shallow, and sandy bottom and there is no fee. Most local kiters prefer this side, creating a friendly and helpful atmosphere. Finding a place to launch and land isn't really a problem, and there is always a friendly person around to help you.
