Team Spots4kite on the Road – Beginning of the Journey

The four-member spots4kite team embarks on a summer kitetrip in Greece. Karel, Veronika, Max and parakeet Pepík. We plan to spend some time around Lefkada and gradually drive through the south of Greece and get to know spots where we have never been before. Of course we will create new spots on the site and inform about our experiences.

Read as well our next post about Bouka kitesurfing spot.

Let’s hit the road

As you can see, our car is not the best and most modern, but it is enough for our purposes. Solar panels on the roof provide us with energy self-sufficiency and a repaired gas refrigerator will hopefully finally work and cool as it should.

On Sunday, June 16., we finally set out on a long-planned summer kite trip to Greece. Departure is three hours later than we wanted, but what is it against the planned 3 months on the road?

First night

The first night wasn’t as planned in Serbia just over the border, but still about two hours away. However, we found a beautiful place on the Danube, as you can see in the photos.

Serbia, Macedonia and finally Greece

Transit through Serbia was standard, along the north-south highway without any surprises. We spent the second night according to the plan on the border of Macedonia – Greece in the parking lot just behind the crossing.

In the morning we agreed that there was no reason to rush for kiting, because the forecast did not look favorable. So the new destination was the city of Ioannina, which we drove past countless times and never looked at. On the way we made a planned stop on the highway, where just two months ago it was fine to sit in a small shelter for frappé, souvlaki and other quick meals. Currently, everything is behind a barbed wire fence and served only through a hole. I’m sure the owners are very “happy” before the season…

Ioannina

Ioannina is a nice little town with a harbour on the shore of the lake. On our evening arrival a storm chased us through the mountains but did not reach the town. The wind was nice, it would have been rideable. There was just no place to launch the kite. We parked right under the castle, sheltered from the early morning sun, within easy reach of running water and a few yards to the town center.

We didn’t dawdle and after a little recovery and a beer we headed out for a tour and gyros.

Finally, first kitespot

After returning and putting Max to bed, we fished outside some more, watched the fireflies fly around and I tried out the new chair. It works great.

Wednesday morning we packed up and found a gas station in town on the way, where we picked up a full tank of water and bought a Greek propane-butane bomb for cooking and a refrigerator. Installation was quite problematic. Even though I had a reducer, the gas still leaked. Only sealing tape directly on the threads helped.

And around two o’clock we were finally at the Bouka kitespot, where we spent the rest of the day unpacking, getting our gear together along the way, and just watching a few kites on the water, knowing that there were going to be storms for the next two days and probably no kiting.
