Sakalava Bay, located in northern Madagascar, about 20 km from Diego Suarez, is a stunning 5 km² bay protected by a coral reef. This remote yet well-equipped kitesurfing destination is rapidly gaining international recognition. Kitesurfers can enjoy a mix of mirror-flat water inside the bay or ride the waves that form on the reef, offering a versatile experience for all skill levels.
The wind blows consistently from mid-March to late December, providing excellent conditions for kitesurfing. It peaks between June and September when the strongest winds arrive. Wind speeds range from 15 to 25 knots in late March and April, increasing to 20 to 30 knots in May and June. The windiest months, July to September, see speeds of 25 to 35 knots, while October returns to 20 to 30 knots. From November to late December, the wind steadies at 15 to 25 knots. The predominant wind directions are side-shore or side-onshore from the southeast.
The climate remains warm year-round, with water temperatures averaging around 28°C, though they can drop to 23°C in July and August.
With its steady side-onshore winds, shallow and flat water, Sakalava Bay is one of the safest kitesurfing spots, making it ideal for beginners. The spacious bay features clear waters, a wide sandy beach, and kite schools offering lessons and equipment rentals.
More advanced riders can catch waves averaging 2 meters just 500 meters from the shore. The bay is also a great spot for kitefoiling and wingfoiling, particularly at high to mid-high tide, providing approximately 4 to 5 hours of ideal conditions per day.
